Overview

The emergence of hospitalists in internal medicine and its subspecialties over the past 25 years has led to significant benefits in hospital length of stay and reduced expenditures. There is accumulating evidence to suggest that gastroenterology (GI) hospitalists may allow GI practices to successfully adapt to the evolving landscape of modern practice. In this activity, leaders in this emerging domain will discuss the various roles of the GI hospitalist in practice, how GI hospitalists can improve the quality of inpatient care, trainee education, and engage in research, and finally the considerations and challenges in building a GI hospitalist program.

Objectives
  1. Describe the key features of the GI hospitalist career path and understand their evolving role in the current practice landscape
  2. Discuss strategies for successful incorporation of GI hospitalist models into practice
  3. Review the impact of a GI hospitalist program on productivity, quality of care, and education
