+ Information:

University of Miami’s Annual Neurology Update and Stroke Intensive Review 2023 will be held January 25-28, 2023 in Miami, Florida.

The 56th Annual Neurology Update and Stroke Intensive Review 2023 provides clinicians with a comprehensive review of the most recent developments in the diagnosis and management of neurologic disorders, including stroke, cognitive neurology/brain health, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders, headache/migraine, neuro-oncology, neuropsychology, sleep disorders and general neurology.

A dedicated stroke seminar will take place on January 28, 2023 and is designed as a stand-alone 8-hour activity. For those centers planning to seek stroke center status or already designated as a stroke center, this course will provide stroke teams with the most up-to-date evidence in the field of stroke diagnosis, treatment and prevention

Challenging diagnostic and therapeutic questions will be raised in each session around representative clinical vignettes, targeted reviews of the topic by the faculty and panel discussions. Exchange of information between faculty and attendees will take place during questions and answers sessions after each presentation as well as round table and panel discussions.

The course is aimed primarily at neurologists, stroke specialists,  neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, neuro-oncologists, hospitalists, intensivists,  fellows, residents, nurses and allied healthcare professionals that participate in the care of neurological patients or work in stroke centers. Internists,  general practitioners and cardiologists may also find the topics timely  and useful.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the completion of the course, attendees will be able to:

COGNITIVE NEUROLOGY

  • Explain precision medicine approaches to create personalized care plans to promote brain health and manage individuals living with neurodegenerative disease
  • Apply concepts of care teams to optimize patient outcomes
  • Explain novel research advances and how these may influence the neurology practice

EPILEPSY

  • Prescribe the newest third generation antiseizure medications for the treatment of focal and generalized epilepsy and Lennox Gastaut Syndrome
  • Recognize when neuromodulation therapies with Deep Brain Stimulation and   Responsive Neurostimulation are indicated for the treatment of refractory epilepsy
  • Select patients with temporal lobe epilepsy who can be ideal candidates for laser ablation of mesial temporal structures

GENERAL NEUROLOGY

  • Apply Optical Coherence Tomography in diagnosing visual pathway problems
  • Identify common neurological symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury and develop an approach for management
  • Examine current uses of deep learning in neurology
  • Review the common causes and epidemiology of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
  • Recognize the symptoms and the treatment of Autonomic Dysreflexia in persons with SCI
Define the criteria for death by neurologic criteria/brain death

HEADACHE/MIGRAINE

  • Identify, diagnose and initiate treatment of common presentations of pediatric migraine and pisodic syndromes that may be associated with migraine
  • Examine the role of headaches in cerebrovascular diseases
  • Identify the appropriate diagnosis and treatment for various headache disorders      including less common and refractory migraine types with focus on recent advancements, integrative strategies and patient-centered management
  • Evaluate the approach to headache and vascular disease in mid-life and older populations, including safer treatment options in high risk populations

MOVEMENT DISORDERS

  • Present the latest diagnostic criteria and treatments for Parkinson’s disease
  • Outline the motor and nonmotor fluctuations that complicate Parkinson’s   disease symptoms.
  • Delineate the diagnosis and treatment of ET and its mimickers

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

  • Diagnose and treat Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Disease (MOGAD)
  • Evaluate cognitive impairment in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients during routine clinical screenings
  • Analyze the safety and use of disease modifying treatments in patients with Multiple Sclerosis and NMOSD during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Explore means by which diet, gut health and lifestyle factors can impact the overall health and well-being of patients with MS
  • Identify the typical brain MS lesions and review radiological MS mimics

NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS

  • Summarize the recent identification of autoantibodies associated with inflammatory neuropathies and review their correlation with clinical presentation and treatment response
  • Outline an approach to the diagnosis of myositis based on autoantibody profiling
  • Review the recent completed clinical trials for ALS
  • Outline the landscape of future studies in development for ALS

NEUROPSYCHOLOGY

  • Define frailty and its association with cognition in middle- and older-life and   suggestions for incorporating frailty screening as part of a physical examination
  • Examine appropriate non-pharmacological interventions for patients with   cognitive disorders •Describe disparities in sleep and cognitive disorders and how to address   these in practice
  • Augment awareness and competence in the factors that influence quality of   life in neurological practice

NEURO-ONCOLOGY

  • Evaluate diagnostic advances for brain tumor patients
  • Recommend multidisciplinary treatment for brain tumor patients Identify challenges in the care of brain tumor patients
  • Analyze the epidemiology, clinical presentation, neuropathology, diagnosis, and treatment options for gliomas
  • Analyze the epidemiology, clinical presentation, neuropathology, diagnosis, and treatment options for adolescents and young adults with brain tumors
  • Evaluate therapeutic advances for brain tumor patients

SLEEP DISORDERS

  • Examine the effect of sleep disorders on brain health outcomes, such as stroke and dementia
  • Review the sleep anatomy and physiology relevant to neurological disorders
  • Evaluate strategies to identify sleep disorders and incorporate sleep health in neurological care

STROKE

  • Treat appropriate acute ischemic stroke patients with modern strategies that   include the extended 24-hour treatment window with thrombolytics,   endovascular approaches and antithrombotic
  • Establish appropriate management of intracerebral hemorrhage according to current guidelines for the management of hypertensive and lobar hemorrhages as well as the role of reversal strategies in coagulopathic hemorrhages
  • Institute measures to prevent a recurrent stroke based on stroke mechanisms and in special populations according to the most recent guidelines and evidence
