This course presents an annual update of major advances in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. The morning session highlights challenging stroke presentations, such as basilar artery thrombosis, which is often misdiagnosed due to its myriad and nonspecific manifestations. Strokes occurring at the extremes of are often hard to identify, as are strokes among hospitalized patients, since new onset encephalopathy has a broad differential in this population. The session concludes with a keynote speech about dizziness and the interface between neuro-otology and stroke. The second session reviews the latest updates in several areas of cerebrovascular disease including the impact of COVID-19 and its vaccines on cerebrovascular events, the prospects of mechanical thrombectomy for medium vessel occlusion, novel tools for prognosticating outcome after cerebrovascular injury, and a review of the recently authored American Heart Association guidelines for secondary stroke prevention. The program concludes with a recap of the landmark stroke studies over the past year.
- Explain the symptoms, pathogenesis, treatment, and outcomes of basilar artery thrombosis.
- Identify the challenges of diagnosing and treating stroke among patients at the extremes of age and patients already hospitalized
- Implement protocols for the workup of dizziness in the Emergency Department
- Discuss the association of COVID-19 and its vaccines with cerebrovascular events
- Prognosticate outcome after cerebrovascular injury
- Compare medical versus surgical management of medium vessel occlusions
- Review the latest guidelines for secondary stroke prevention
- Critique the limitations of the studies referenced above
- Formulate evidence-based treatment algorithms for the management of patients with these conditions
