“Cancer Biology for Neuroscientists” is a specialized 3-day virtual course that took place in October 2024. Developed as part of the broader Cancer Neuroscience T32 training initiatives at Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, this program is designed to introduce researchers to the fundamental principles of cancer biology, fundamental neuroscience, and the rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field of cancer neuroscience. The course highlights the critical role the nervous system plays in driving malignancy and explores new therapeutic avenues.
Learning Objectives
Upon participation in the course, attendees should be able to:
-
Understand the foundational principles of cancer biology and how they intersect with neurobiology.
-
Analyze the intricate crosstalk between the nervous system, the immune system, and cancer cells (including both central and peripheral nervous systems).
-
Evaluate how cancer leverages the neuronal microenvironment, axon biology, and mechanisms of brain plasticity to drive tumor growth.
-
Examine the mechanisms of cancer metastasis to the central nervous system and the genomic evolution of brain metastases.
-
Discuss the development of novel neuro-therapeutics, cellular immunotherapies, and emerging technologies in cancer neuroscience.
Target Audience
- This program is intended for basic scientists, translational researchers, clinical investigators, and post-doctoral trainees (including Ph.D., M.D., and M.D./Ph.D. candidates) engaged in cancer research, neurobiology, or neuro-oncology.
- Best for Neuro-Oncologists, Neurologists, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Neurosurgeons, and Neuropathologists.
