The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is proud to present the 5th Annual Stepping Strong Trauma Research and Innovation Symposium on Thursday, November 3, 2022, from 2:30-6:00 pm. A virtual event, Innovation in the Continuum of Trauma Care: Spotlight on Firearm Safety will feature a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional group of clinicians, researchers, policy experts, educators, and community advocates who are working together to transform the full spectrum of trauma research and care.
Panels include research presentations by Stepping Strong Innovator Award and Breakthrough Award recipients, conversations about firearm safety and suicide prevention, and a keynote presentation by Joseph V. Sakran, MD, MPH, MPA. A trauma surgeon and himself a gun violence survivor, Dr. Sakran is a coalition builder, policy advisor, public health expert, and nationally recognized advocate for gun violence prevention.
This event will provide an opportunity to engage directly with experts from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester Medical School, and community-based organizations in the Greater Boston Area. The symposium will end with the much-anticipated announcement of the 2023 Stepping Strong Innovator and Breakthrough Award recipients.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for researchers, physicians, nurses, public health personnel, injury prevention leaders, psychiatrists, social workers, government officials, policy experts, survivors of gun violence, and community-based organizations.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Recognize phases of a research project—from the inception of a groundbreaking idea to furthering research through multidisciplinary collaboration to the commercialization of a product.
- Review advances in firearm safety from the perspective of researchers, policymakers, educators, and trauma surgeons.
- Assess evidence-based solutions for preventing suicide through clinical and community-based approaches.
- Integrate the multidisciplinary approach to trauma care across our discussions.
