The Clinical Reasoning Series in Pharmacotherapy has been approved by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) as one component of the professional development programs developed by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) for recertification of the Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS). This educational series explores cutting-edge, contemporary therapeutic topics and demonstrates scientifically sound clinical reasoning and decision-making. It employs learning activities designed to advance participants’ skills and abilities to critically evaluate scientific evidence and effectively incorporate significant findings into daily practice that lead to effective and safe patient care. The program consists of several educational activities presented across three primary clinical parts, delivered via synchronized audio/slide presentations, downloadable audio/video files, and reference slide materials.
Learning Objectives
-
Evaluate the mechanisms of action, clinical indications, therapeutic monitoring, and management strategies for adverse events associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and immune effector cell (IEC) therapies.
-
Distinguish between overlapping clinical features of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (asthma-COPD overlap) and optimize biologic therapies for severe pulmonary disease.
-
Incorporate evidence-based pharmacotherapy for obstructive sleep apnea with comorbid obesity and implement updated immunization schedules relevant to pulmonary care.
-
Formulate patient-specific peri-procedural antithrombotic management plans for acute coronary syndromes (ACS), balancing ischemic protection against bleeding risk.
-
Assess cardiovascular risk using contemporary predictive models (e.g., PREVENT vs. Pooled Cohort Equations) and biomarkers to guide individualized statin and novel non-statin lipid-lowering therapies.
Target Audience
Pharmacotherapy specialists who manage or encounter patients receiving oncologic medication treatment, pulmonary medication management, or cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, as well as clinical pharmacists and healthcare providers who engage in medication monitoring, safety, and patient-centered education.
Best for Medical Oncologists, Hematologists, Pulmonologists, Sleep Medicine Specialists, Cardiologists (Interventional Cardiologists), Critical Care Physicians, and Primary Care Physicians.
