+ Information:

The ACCP-ASHP Critical Care Pharmacy Preparatory Review and Recertification Course is a comprehensive, curriculum-based educational initiative co-developed by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Designed to align with the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Critical Care Pharmacy Content Outline, this course serves a dual purpose: preparing clinical pharmacists for the Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist (BCCCP) specialty examination and delivering rigorous, advanced continuing professional development for current specialists seeking recertification. The program focuses on advanced clinical reasoning, contemporary therapeutic guidelines, and pharmacotherapeutic decision-making in the care of critically ill adult patients across medical, surgical, neurocritical, cardiac, and trauma intensive care settings.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinical therapeutics required to manage complex critically ill patients across diverse intensive care settings.

  • Formulate, implement, and monitor evidence-based pharmacotherapeutic regimens for hemodynamic instability, acute shock states, severe sepsis and septic shock, and hypertensive emergencies.

  • Manage acute respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), status asthmaticus, and advanced mechanical ventilation strategies with appropriate pharmacotherapy and sedation protocols.

  • Optimize sedation, analgesia, neuromuscular blockade, and the prevention/management of delirium in the intensive care unit (PADIS guidelines).

  • Differentiate and manage acute neurologic and neurocritical care emergencies, including traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, and therapeutic temperature management.

  • Evaluate and manage acute renal failure, renal replacement therapy drug dosing, acid-base and fluid/electrolyte disorders, and acute endocrine emergencies.

  • Design pharmacotherapeutic strategies for acute coronary syndromes, acute decompensated heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.

  • Address specialized critical care issues, including trauma and burn resuscitation, massive hemorrhage and reversal of anticoagulation, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis/treatment, toxicologic emergencies, and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic alterations in critical illness.

  • Interpret biomedical literature, biostatistical methodologies, study designs, and quality improvement metrics relevant to critical care practice.

Target Audience

This course is designed for clinical pharmacists preparing for the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Critical Care Pharmacy Specialty Certification Examination (BCCCP), Board-Certified Critical Care Pharmacists seeking recertification, and health-system practitioners seeking a comprehensive review of contemporary pharmacotherapy for critically ill patients.

Best for Critical Care Medicine Specialists (Intensivists), Neurointensivists, Pulmonologists, Cardiologists (Interventional and Heart Failure Specialists), Emergency Medicine Physicians, Trauma Surgeons, Acute Care Surgeons, Nephrologists, and Medical Toxicologists.
