Head and neck and endocrine pathology can often be diagnostically challenging due to the complexity of disease and the diversity of entities that can be encountered. In addition, the field is ever evolving with advances in molecular diagnostics, the identification of novel entities, and updated classification schemes. It can be challenging for pathologists to remain up to date and accurate diagnosis is essential for prognostication and risk stratification.

This course is designed to provide a practical approach to the diagnosis of both common and uncommon lesions encountered in head and neck/endocrine pathology. Participants will become familiar with updated classifications, key diagnostic features, as well as important prognostic features of varying entities encountered in daily practice.

This course offers digital slides for each case presented. You can view the case history and whole slide image (WSI) as unknowns by selecting Pre-session Slide Preview, or you can refer to the slides as you watch each video.
Target Audience
Practicing academic and community pathologists, and pathologists-in-training
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify and classify common and uncommon thyroid lesions and define an approach to follicular patterned lesions.
  • Recognize the key diagnostic features to differentiate various salivary gland tumors and sinonasal lesions and identify potential pitfalls.
  • Identify common and unusual oral and odontogenic lesions.
  • Understand the use of ancillary studies (molecular and immunohistochemistry) in the diagnosis and risk stratification of head and neck/endocrine tumors.

+ Topics:

  • Thyroid and Parathyroid Pathology – Theresa Scognamiglio, MD
  • Mesenchymal Lesions of the Head and Neck – Darcy A. Kerr, MD
  • Salivary Gland and Sinonasal Pathology – Christopher C. Griffith, MD, PhD
  • Oral and Odontogenic Lesions – Elizabeth A. Bilodeau, MD, DMD
